CHARD NEWS: Community spirit is alive and well in Chard says Mayor
THE Mayor of Chard has thanked everyone for their efforts over the past few days in helping to clear snow and ice from town centre pavements and roads and looking out for elderly neigbours.
Chard Town Council’s amenities team was joined by some councillors and volunteers to assist in the arduous job of shovelling snow and ice.
The work was carried out in the town centre and from local homes belonging to Chard’s more senior citizens.
And the Mayor, Cllr Garry Shortland, has been truly humbled at the fantastic community spirit which shone so brightly it helping in melting the snow away.
“It has been amazing what people in the community have done over the past few days clearing drives and paths, taking people to hospital, picking up care works and looking after their neighbours,” he said.
Cllr Shortland also thanked all the local hotels and B&B accommodation outlets which took in people who were left stranded in Chard when the Beast from the East collided with Storm Emma in Somerset.
“I would just like to thank everyone who has helped in whatever way to making the last few days safer and better for so many people,” he said. “It really does make you feel proud – community spirit is alive and well.”
