YOUTH CRICKET: Redstart’s A-team show that catches win matches
BRILLIANT batting and bowling performances may grab the cricket headlines, but it is fab fielding which can also win matches and so it proved at Holyrood Academy in Chard when it hosted a Primary Indoor Cricket Competition.
Four teams from Redstart, Neroche and Chard School of Year 5-6 pupils competed in a round-robin tournament that saw each team play three 12-over games and let them show off their batting, bowling and fielding skills.
Chard played Neroche in the first game of the afternoon. Some excellent batting and fielding displays resulted in an exciting finish with Neroche winning by just one run.
In the second game, some brilliant boundary hitting helped Redstart A beat fellow school friends Redstart B by six runs.
Redstart B then hit 222 against Chard and were able to limit their opposition to 189 to gain their first win of the day.
The fourth game of the afternoon saw Redstart A beat Neroche by 20 runs before Redstart B won their game against Neroche by seven runs in the penultimate game.
Some superb bowling and fielding from Chard in the last game resulted in Redstart A finishing their innings on a low total of 203.
In return, Chard looked to be cruising at the beginning of their innings but a remarkable comeback from Redstart A saw them take some game-changing catches which led to Chard finishing on 199.
After a wonderful afternoon of cricket, Redstart A were named champions!
Miss Sims, sports coach at Holyrood Academy, said: “Well done to all of the teams. I was really impressed with the standard of cricket that was played. Many of the games had really close and exciting finishes which is testament to the hard work and talent of these young pupils."
