CHARD NEWS: Howzat! Estate agent becomes new chairman at Somerset County Cricket Club

CHARD estate agent Charles Clark is relishing the prospect of becoming chairman of Somerset County Cricket Club later this month when Andy Nash steps down to take on a new role at the ECB.

Mr Clark, chairman and a partner of Greenslade Taylor Hunt and based in the company’s Chard office on the corner of High Street and Holyrood Street, will be no stranger to Somerset supporters because he is a regular at the County Ground on match days. He is also regularly seen at the club running charity auctions.

“For someone like me who is passionate about Somerset, it’s a dream post to be able to take on,” he said. “My grandparents farmed at Wedmore and I was born in Somerset. My mother has followed the cricket since the late 1930s and has been a Member ever since.

“When I was growing up, we used to get taken to watch Somerset playing at Weston-super-Mare so it has always been in my blood and it’s a great honour to become chairman of the club.”

Mr Clark also recalled his first visit to the Taunton to watch Somerset play.

“My father was an auctioneer in Taunton Market and he brought me across to my first ever game at the County Ground,” he said. “That was in July 1967 when we were playing Pakistan. That year my Grandfather gave me my first ever Wisden and I have got every year since then.”

Regarding the job that he is stepping up to at the annual meeting on Monday, January 22, 2018, he said: “Having been on the committee since 2010, I feel that it is a job I can cope with as I have been involved with the management of the club since then.

“I feel that I am an approachable and available person, having come from a private client background and I can read a balance sheet- which is also important!”

Mr Clark is hoping to see the progression and development of homegrown players come through the ranks at Somerset CCC.

“The greatest satisfaction in the role of chairman will be seeing good young local players and Academy players thrive,” he said. “At Somerset we have some outstanding prospects from England Under-19 level upwards, so there are exciting times ahead!”

And he added: “Nothing would give me greater pleasure than to be chairman of Somerset County Cricket Club when they first win the Specsavers County Championship.”
