CARNIVAL: Everyone’s a winner in Chard Children’s Carnival
THE Chard Children’s Carnival got Saturday (October 14, 2017) off to a perfect start with a bumper entry list, a great crowd of supporters lining the streets and good weather.
The Children’s Carnival always has a crop of Carnivalites for the future who will hopefully keep the long-held tradition going in the years ahead.
And it was encouraging to see more and more young people taking part in the parade – coupled with some fantastic entries which would certainly not look out of place on the County Carnival circuit.
Congratulations go to the organisers once again for putting on a real festival of Carnival fun for the youngsters.
Last year the organisers decided to move the Children’s Carnival to the same day as the main evening Carnival and this year they decided to change the route which saw the procession leave Manor Court Primary School and go up along Crowshute and down High Street and Fore Street before heading into Boden Street and finishing off at the Lace Mill.
The Mayor of Chard, Cllr Garry Shortland, and the town crier Stuart Cumming were on hand to offer some support and the procession was led by the excellent Chard-based Evolution Majorettes.
The judges had the annual difficult job of picking winners, but really everyone who takes part in Carnival is a winner – especially in the Children’s Carnival.
But, here for the record, are the actual results: Single entry up to five-years-old: 1 Stupid Cupid.
Single entry six to 16-years-old: 1 Crock of Gold; 2 Tea Rex.
Pairs up to 16-years-old: 1 We Built This City; 2 Back in Time & Pigs in Blankets; 3 At The Bottom of The Garden.
Groups of three and above in number: 1 1st Chard Vikings; 2 Puss in Boots; 3 100 Years of Girl Guiding Chard.
Wheeled entries: 1 Snoopy and the Red Barron; 2 Stop Me & Buy One; 3 Noah’s Ark. Highly Commended: Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo; Who Lives at the Bottom of the Garden; Star Wars – The Baby Awakens.
Federation class, walking: 1 Illuminators; 2 Indian Dream; 3 Oceania.
